Water Pollution Laboratory

The Limerick City Council Water Pollution Laboratory in based in the Park Road Depot, Rhebogue Limerick City. Ms Eithne Lynch Laboratory Technician is responsible for the day to day running of the Laboratory and the following duties are carried out :

Monitoring of Limerick City Drinking Water supply is carried out on a daily basis with samples collected at random across the city. The laboratory also responds to consumer drinking water complaints and analysis are carried out under the E.C Drinking Water Regulations 2000

Monitoring of the quality of the water at the Clareville Water Treatment Plant based in Castleconnell is carried out daily and in the Reservoir once a week. Sampling is also carried out monthly at the treatment plant for Cryptosporidium analysis. Routine monitoring of the Raw Water Supply from the River Shannon and the Headrace Canal is also performed.

Bathing Water quality is surveyed yearly from eight locations. Samples are collected by the pollution Laboratory and subsequent bacterial examination is carried out by the Vetinerary Dept.

Chemical and Bacteriological Samples are collected on a monthly basis from Westfield's Wetlands Area

Leachate* and receiving water monitoring at Longpavement Landfill is carried out four times each year. (*Leachate is a liquid, mostly water, which seeps out from the base of landfilled waste or composting material.)

Effluent samples are collected from Dairy Industries, Metal Planting industries, Laundrettes and Restaurants/Hotels etc each year. They are analysed under the regulations given in their Discharge Licence

The Water Pollution Laboratory Technician is also responsible for the following as they occur:

  • Oil Pollution investigations and oil spill clean-up
  • Assisting Water/Sewerage Dept. in the sourcing of leaks
  • Investigation of odour and smoke complaints
  • Environmental noise investigations
