1000 musicians to take part in International Band Championship

Details of one of the world’s largest and most prestigious international band competitions have been announced as part of Limerick City of Culture 2014.

21 marching bands from across Ireland, Europe and the USA will perform in the 44th Limerick International Band Championship in Limerick City on Sunday, 16th March at 12 noon.

Over 1000 musicians are expected to compete for the title of 'Overall Parade Champion' in Ireland’s only international band competition, which is run on behalf of the Limerick Marketing Company by Futureama Productions.

“Featuring a world class judging panel and attracting some 40,000 spectators to the City's streets, the event celebrates the importance of music to the people of Limerick as part of its City of Culture 2014 reign,” commented Mayor of Limerick Cllr. Kathleen Leddin, who added:. “Limerick is immensely proud of this annual event and looks forward to welcoming hundreds of musicians and their families from all over the world as part of our City of Culture celebrations.”

The Orchestra of The Estonian Defence Forces and four bands from the USA will participate in the 2014 International Band Championship. Participants include Fort Madison High School Band, Iowa (USA); La Canada School Band, California (USA);Clover Hill High School Band (USA); Acton-Boxborough Regional High School Marching Colonials (USA);  Dulzainas De Avila Pipe Band (Spain); Friendship Band (Northern Ireland); Killorglin & District Pipe Band (Kerry); The 1 Southern Brigade (Cork); Maghery Fife & Drum Band (Donegal); St Catherine's Marching Band, Clondalkin Youth Band (Dublin); and from Limerick - St Mary’s Prize Band, Rathkeale Brass Band, Limerick City Rhythm , CBS Pipe Band, Limerick City Brass and Reed Band, Boherbuoy Brass and Reed Band, City of Limerick Pipe Band, Corpus Christi Pipe Band and the Redemptorist Centre of Music Concert Band.

Prizes in this year’s Championship will be awarded in the following categories: Best International Band, Best Youth Band, Best Local Band, Best Musical Performance, Best Uniform, Most Entertaining Performance, Special Judges Award, Mayors Prize and All Ireland International Band Championship Winner. The competition will be judged by an international panel of professors of music.

The International Band Championship starts from Pery Square at 12 noon on March 16th and ends with a free concert for the public in Arthur’s Quay Park. Winners will be announced in Arthur’s Quay following the display.

Dr. D.  Bradley Snow, Assistant Teaching Professor, Director of Bands, DMA, University of Southern Mississippi, USA

Dr. Stanley F. Michalksi, Jr., Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Music and Conductor of Bands at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, USA

Dr. Andrea DeRenzis Strauss, PHD, Conductor of Tara Winds and Director of Bands/Associate Professor at Shorter University, USA

and from Ireland

Dr. Evelyn Grant – Cork Pops Orchestra and presenter Niall Carroll – RTE Lyric FM

The Championship forms part of a comprehensive St Patrick’s Festival in Limerick City and precedes the Limerick St Patrick’s Day Parade on Monday, March 17th at 12 noon. The Festival Programme is sponsored by Limerick City and County Council in conjunction with Stryker, Fáilte Ireland, Analog Devices and Limerick's Live 95FM.
