Christmas shoppers & visitors to Limerick City can avail of more than 3000 free on-street car parking spaces EVERY DAY in a new parking initiative starting this December.

Following a resolution adopted by Limerick City Council at its monthly meeting held on Monday 22nd October, on-street parking will be FREE every afternoon from 2pm on Saturday, December 8th to Monday, December 31st inclusive. On-street parking in Limerick city is always free on Sundays.

Welcoming the free on-street parking initiative, Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Gerry McLoughlin said the city centre is a perfect place for Christmas shopping.

“There are thousands of on and off street parking options in Limerick which will be clearly displayed on the VMS traffic signs at entry points to the city,” Mayor McLoughlin said.

“Building on the success of the current FreePark scheme where multi storey car parks will offer free parking to shoppers when they spend a set amount, this Christmas parking initiative is another good reason to come into the city and experience all that it has to offer, particularly throughout the atmospheric festive season.”

Announcing the plans, Manager of Limerick Local Authorities, Conn Murray, said he hoped the initiative would boost pre-Christmas trade in the city centre.

“In order for the Greater Limerick Area to thrive, it requires a strong city at its core and we wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to shop in Limerick city centre this Christmas,” he said.

“We want to encourage families to come in, support the city and enjoy the atmosphere, shopping and festive food and craft markets that Limerick will offer over the Christmas period. As well as providing free on-street parking from 2pm every afternoon from December 8th, the local authority will be financially supporting the city’s extensive Christmas lights display and a marketing campaign which will begin when the Christmas lights are officially turned on in Limerick city centre on November 16th.”

Full details of Christmas celebrations in Limerick will also be announced on Friday, November 16th.
