Cian to lead The Red Army at the Limerick St Patrick’s Day Parade

Friday, March 13th 2009

Six year old Cian Casey from Castleconnell in Co Limerick has been announced as the 2009 Junior Marshal for the Limerick St Patrick’s Day parade.

Friday the 13th turned out to his lucky day as he was announced the winner of the Junior Marshal competition on the Breakfast Show on Limerick’s Live 95FM earlier today.

Cian, who is in Junior Infants in the Model School in O’Connell Avenue said he’s “so excited” at the prospect of leading the Red Army.

“I love Limerick and I love rugby, my favourite player is Keith Earls,” Cian revealed. “I was hoping that I’d become the Junior Marshal all week and I can’t believe my wish has come true,” he added.

Cian also plays rugby with the Young Munster under eights team and he was the proud mascot at the Ireland v Canada game at Thomond Park last November. He has one sister, Saoirse, who’s 2. Cian’s mum Gillian said he will hardly sleep he will be so excited before the parade. She will accompany him on the big day.

On St Patrick’s Day, Cian will:

  • Receive his Junior Marshal sash by the Commanding Officer of the 12th Battalion at Sarsfield Barracks
  • Be driven along the parade route with his mum Gillian in a swanky 1970 Munster red MGB roadster just like secret agent James Bond!
  • Have the honour of being a VIP and the first Limerick Junior Marshal
  • Meet Murty the mascot
  • Lead the hundreds strong Red Army of parents and junior rugby fans.

The Limerick Co-Ordination Office is still looking for young rugby fans and their parents/guardians to wear their Munster or club colours and represent the Red Army in the parade.
