Limerick's Pig ‘n’ Porter Tag Rugby Fest

Ireland’s largest and best Tag Rugby Festival, Limerick’s Pig ‘n’ Porter will be expanded into a three day event this July, it was announced today.

Old Crescent RFC in association with the Irish Tag Rugby Association (ITRA) will host the 8th annual Pig ‘n’ Porter Tag Rugby Festival at its grounds in Rosbrien, Limerick between Friday, July 17th and Sunday, July 19th 2009.

The event is expected to attract in excess of 3000 people to the venue for the largest Tag Rugby event in Ireland to be held this year.

Speaking at the launch today in Clohessy’s Pub, Harvey’s Quay, Limerick, organiser Pádraic O’Connor said the Pig ‘n’ Porter has been growing steadily over the past eight years.

“We started with 12 teams in 2002, had over 90 teams last year from all across Ireland and the UK and this year we’re hoping to have 120 teams,” he said. “The festival brings a large number of visitors to Limerick for the weekend and it is always a huge success. Since its inception, we’ve had more than 10,000 participants and we’re delighted to be a permanent fixture on Limerick’s sporting calendar.”

Pat Daly, Tourism & Marketing Division Manager with Shannon Development said; “We are delighted to support the Pig & Porter Tag Rugby Festival organised by Old Crescent RFC. The development of sports tourism is an integral part of Shannon Development’s tourism strategy and events such as the Pig & Porter Tag Rugby Festival enable us to showcase the proud sporting tradition of Limerick to a wide audience.  Sporting festivals like the Pig & Porter Festival provide a welcome boost to the tourism and hospitality sectors including accommodation providers, bars, restaurants and visitor attractions”.

The event commences with a welcome party at The Piggery in the grounds of Old Crescent RFC on Friday night, July 17th.

There will be special guests attending the event helping to build the spirit of rugby in Limerick, the rugby capital of Ireland.

On Saturday, July 18th, the main event, the Pig ‘n’ Porter Tag Rugby Festival gets underway contested by 120 teams from the UK/Ireland.

Throughout the day, the iconic pig will be roasting on a spit ahead of the legendary Pig ‘n’ Porter BBQ.

When the prizes have been handed out and the weary bodies have had a chance to recover, the festival continues into the early hours with live ballad sessions, a live band, a bouncy castle, bucking bronco bull and a disco.
