Have Your Say In Limerick City’s Future

Wednesday, January 14 2009

Are you concerned about the future of Limerick city? Worried about jobs, infrastructure and investment in the challenging years ahead?
Now you have a chance to have a say in how your city will grow and develop over the next four years.
Limerick City Council is holding a series of public meetings to discuss the Limerick City Draft Development Plan 2010-2016.

Anyone interested in the proper planning and sustainable development of Limerick city can air their views at any of nine meetings to be held across the city beginning on the evening of Tuesday, January 20th 2009.

Kieran Reeves, Limerick City Council, senior planner, said that the meetings are being held at an important time as policies are being developed for the future of the City in changing economic times.
“The purpose of the discussions is to inform people of the current and more pressing issues that Limerick City now faces and to consult with them so we can find out what issues and concerns they have in relation to their own areas,” he said.
He continued: “We very much appreciate the comments from a wide variety of people who live in the city and care about its future. We want to encourage people to think about how we should plan for development and an input from all members of the public, voluntary groups and statutory agencies is very welcome.”

The issues to be discussed at the meetings include Population and Housing Trends in Limerick, the Economy, the City Centre as a Driver of Economic Development and Environmental and Heritage Concerns.

Questions which may be asked include:

  • What are the most sustainable locations for the construction of new developments?
  • What facilities are lacking in the City to support the needs of its residents?
  • What can be done to improve the economic performance of the city centre?
  • What role should public transport play?

Now at the pre-draft stage, the public consultations will be used to prepare the draft plan combined with the City Manager’s report/recommendations and the City Councillor’s directions/motions.

An issues paper is available from City Hall with further information.

Limerick City Council is also inviting written submissions or observations on the preparation of a new plan and a review of the existing City Development Plan.
