First International Football Match for Limerick

3rd of March 2009

Limerick will host its first senior international soccer match next August when the Republic of Ireland host Australia at Thomond Park.

The Football Association of Ireland and Thomond Park Stadium announced that they had reached an agreement to hold a soccer game at the venue for the first time in the stadium’s history.

The Republic of Ireland senior team will play Australia in a friendly on August 12th.

There is also the strong possibility of another international at the venue before the move to the new Aviva Stadium at Lansdowne Road in 2010. Only Dublin and Cork have previously hosted full senior internationals.

Thomond Park Stadium Director, John Cantwell, said he was delighted the game was taking place at the Limerick venue.

“We are very pleased that the FAI has agreed to bring international football to Thomond Park and Limerick.

It is a great boost for Limerick and the many football and sports fans throughout the region who now have the opportunity to watch international football on their doorstep. We are looking forward to working with the FAI to stage this memorable event,” he said.

FAI chief executive John Delaney praised the management team at Thomond Park.

“I thank the stadium’s management and board for their foresight in opening up Thomond Park to other sports which will enable us to bring senior international football to Limerick for the first time,” he said.

The Aussies are ranked 27th in the FIFA world rankings, two places above Ireland.

Thomond Park can hold a capacity 26,000 people and given the occasion and the visitors set to include some well known English players, it should be a sell out.

Limerick FC are also interested in staging exhibition games at Thomond Park and hope to host at least one game, expected to be Sunderland, over the Summer.

The event joins the summer schedule of international acts in Limerick which sees Elton John at Thomond Park Stadium on Saturday 6th June and Rod Stewart on Saturday 4th July.
