On Yer Bike Limerick!

Patrick Sarsfield Car Free Parade Saturday, September 19th 2009
Follow Sarsfield from City Hall to the Treaty Stone!

Join Patrick Sarsfield and families from all over Limerick for this year’s Car Free Parade which takes place on Saturday, September 19th 2009.

Limerick City Council is inviting you to enjoy the city centre without fear of traffic or congestion and join in the fun for the parade which starts at 1pm from City Hall, Merchant’s Quay to the Treaty Stone on Clancy’s Strand.
You can walk, cycle, skate, skip, hop, cartwheel or even march to the event!
Families and businesses are encouraged to participate to show their support for a less car dependent Limerick, better public transport, more pedestrian friendly zones in the city and better facilities for cyclists.

Local actor Mike Finn will play historical figure Patrick Sarsfield on the day so why not join him for a cycle?

Entertainment for the Limerick Car Free Parade includes:
Music on the parade route
A spectacular action filled 1690 Battle Re-Enactment at Clancy’s Strand
A sword fencing demonstration
Street Entertainment
Military encampment display

There will also be prizes for best fancy dress and for those with the best dressed bike!
Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Kevin Kiely is calling for everyone to get involved.
“Any reduction in our use of cars has obvious benefits for the environment by reducing pollution levels,” he said. “But this is a day out for the family; a chance to have fun, enjoy some great entertainment and to showcase the city’s recently remodelled riverscape. If you’ve always used your car, this is also a chance to use other alternatives,” he added.

The Patrick Sarsfield Car Free Parade is run as part of European Mobility Week 2009 which takes place between September 16th and 22nd.
Mobility Week 2009 is an EU initiative, the purpose of which is to promote sustainable approaches to travel (Public Transport, Cycling and Walking) and to highlight the damaging effect that private car use has on human  health and on the earth’s climate.

Warning: This will be not a spectators parade. Everyone will be expected to join in!
